Episode #55 Alternative Learning for Young People
Special Guests: Jacqui O’Connell and Gemma Murphy
Gemma and Jacqui run Spiritus which is located in Hammersmith West London, providing workshops for Young People aged 9-16yrs old who are deregistered from mainstream school.
Some Young people have never attended mainstream school and some of them have left school due to being bullied, racism, anxiety and simply not fitting in. so they decided to provide a safe space where our young people can socialise, find their spark and work towards an area of learning that actually interests them.
Both Gemma’s and Jacqui’s children are homeschooled and they found that there was not much available in the way of workshops or activities for children to engage in that was consistent each week, or where other children their ages would attend.
So with Jacqui's vision of having an alternative style of learning and some of Gemma’s connections, they opened up Spiritus in April 2021 as a Not For Profit, with a simple yet relevant mission: to provide young people with an awakened learning experience.
